A shocking incident unfolded at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-Chapel Hill) on Monday when a faculty member was tragically shot and killed on campus. The incident prompted a swift and comprehensive response from university officials and law enforcement.
According to statements from both university officials and the police, the alleged shooter has been identified as Tailei Qi, a graduate student in the field of applied physical sciences. Qi was taken into custody by law enforcement officers in the afternoon of the same day as the shooting occurred. The investigation into the incident is ongoing, and formal charges against Qi are still pending, as revealed during a press conference held by law enforcement on Monday evening.

Tailei Qi, the alleged shooter, had been pursuing his graduate studies at UNC-Chapel Hill since 2022. Prior to that, he had completed his master’s degree in Material Science at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge and earned his bachelor’s degree in physics from Wuhan University in Hubei Province, China, as indicated on his LinkedIn page.
The shooting sent shockwaves through the campus community. The university promptly issued an Alert Carolina message to inform students, faculty, and staff of the situation and advise them to stay in a safe and secure location. As a precaution, the campus was put on lockdown for several hours while law enforcement conducted their search and investigation.
Students, faculty, and staff were directed to take shelter in classrooms, libraries, laboratories, and dormitories. Authorities urged individuals to turn off lights and barricade doors as they worked to locate the suspect. Eventually, at 2:35 p.m., a photo of Qi was released by the university police, designating him as a person of interest. However, it’s important to note that a different individual, not connected to the shooting, was initially apprehended and later released.
